Turkey's Orkun Kokcu out of Euro 2024 quarter-final through suspension

Turkey midfielder Orkun Kokcu will miss his side’s European Championship quarter-final against the Netherlands through suspension.

The 23-year-old midfielder was shown a yellow card in the 11th minute of his side’s 2-1 last 16 victory over Austria on Tuesday for a foul on Christoph Baumgartner, having been booked in his nation’s 2-1 group stage victory over Czech Republic.

Yellow cards are only reset after the quarter-final stage of the competition, meaning that any players who pick up two yellow cards during the first five matches of the tournament face a one-match suspension.

Turkey were without playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu and defender Samet Akaydin through suspension for their round-of-16 stage victory, but both will now return for the last eight clash against the Netherlands on Saturday in Berlin.

Benfica midfielder Kokcu has scored two goals across 32 international caps for Turkey. He has featured in all four of his side’s matches at Euro 2024.

Kokcu was substituted off in the 86th minute of the win over Austria, replaced by Fenerbahce attacking midfielder Irfan Kahveci.
