Trey Lance saw his first game action in two years with the Dallas Cowboys, taking over for the benched Cooper Rush in the fourth quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
Lance had previously checked in for a two-play package in the third quarter, but Rush came right back in and fumbled on the next play.
On the next series, Lance took a sack on his first play before completing three passes. The possession ended on a lost fumble by tight end Jake Ferguson and Lance pushed safety Reed Blankenship out of bounds. The Eagles’ C.J. Gardner-Johnson intercepted Lance on the next possession.
Lance finished with 21 passing yards completing four of his six passes with an interception. He also rushed for 17 yards on three attempts.

Rush and Lance were next in line at quarterback after Dallas lost Dak Prescott to injury following the team’s Week 9 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Prescott was put on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. He exited at the end of the third quarter of the Cowboys’ 27-21 loss to the Falcons and did not return. He later told reporters the injury was “something I’ve never felt” and that he “felt something pull” in his hamstring. The three-time Pro Bowler has thrown for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season.

Dallas acquired Lance in a 2023 trade with the San Francisco 49ers, who had drafted Lance with the third pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. This year, he had seen action in the preseason, but until Sunday had not taken a regular season snap for the Cowboys. In eight games with San Francisco, Lance threw for 797 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions, while rushing for 235 yards and a touchdown.
