In 1884, renowned abolitionist Frederick Douglass remarried following the death of his first wife. The then controversial interracial wedding took place at the Washington, DC, home of NAACP cofounder Francis James Grimké. The historic four-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom town house still stands today and was recently listed for $1.8 million.

Built in 1875, the home was less than a decade old at the time of Douglass’s wedding in its parlor room. While the home’s brick exterior seems to appear much as it did back then, inside it’s been updated. Backed by a bay-window-framed breakfast nook, the newly redesigned kitchen has granite countertops and bright white cabinetry. Upstairs, you’ll find more built-in cabinetry in the hallway and a couple of the bedrooms, while the primary has four closets making for plenty of storage space.

Compass’s Jennifer Touchette and Meredith Margolis hold the listing.
