Jason Tindall has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for his involvement in a “mass confrontation” during Newcastle United’s Premier League win over Aston Villa on Boxing Day.
Tindall, Newcastle’s assistant head coach, and Villa’s first-team analyst Victor Manas were dismissed by referee Anthony Taylor after tensions boiled over between the two sides at the break of the fixture at St James’ Park.
The FA charged both coaches with acting in an “improper manner” on Thursday, opening up the possibility for further punishment.
Newcastle and Villa have also been charged with failing to “ensure that their players and/or technical area occupants did not behave in a way which is improper and/or provocative within the tunnel area”.
Visiting Villa manager Unai Emery had earlier been left angered by the decision to send off Jhon Duran with Tindall later seen shushing the Spaniard in the technical area.

Howe defends Tindall after half-time melee, red card
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe had stood up for Tindall in the aftermath of the incident.
“Yeah, I don’t think that’s far off,” Howe said when asked if it was “fair” to describe the incident as a “20-man half-time melee” in the tunnel.
“These things always start out I don’t think with the intention of it happening in the way that it did. There was probably 17 or 18 people trying to calm it down, but what it looks like then are more people are involved.
“No-one wants to see that, it’s not at all how I want my players or staff to be, but sometimes you have to stand up to what you think is right and protect each other.”
Newcastle and Aston Villa are next in FA Cup action against Bromley and West Ham United respectively.
