Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has been given permission by the team to seek a trade, a team source confirmed to The Athletic. ESPN was the first to report the news. Here’s what you need to know:
- Taylor was seeking a contract extension entering the final year of his rookie deal, and he voiced his displeasure this offseason about the diminishing running back market. Taylor requested a trade on July 29, league sources confirmed to The Athletic.
- Colts owner Jim Irsay told members of the media in July the team had no plans to trade Taylor.
- Taylor missed six games last year because of a nagging right ankle injury that required surgery in January. Currently on the PUP list, he has not practiced since training camp began on July 26.
- The 24-year-old rushed for 861 yards and four touchdowns in 11 games in 2022-23.
Backstory
Taylor was named first-team All-Pro in 2021, a first for a Colts running back since 1999, after leading the NFL in both rushing yards (1,811) and (18) touchdowns.
Taylor initially injured his ankle in Week 4 last season, aggravated it in Week 8 and tweaked his ankle again in Week 15 before being placed on season-ending injured reserve. He planned to only rehab the ankle this offseason, but because the discomfort continued, Taylor ultimately decided it was “a no-brainer” to have surgery.
