Former Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner’s son, Miller Gardner, died of carbon monoxide poisoning on vacation in Costa Rica authorities confirmed, according to reports.

Miller Gardner, 14, died on March 21 while the family was staying at a resort. A toxicology report found high carboxyhemoglobin levels, a sign of carbon monoxide poisoning, along with other indications of carbon monoxide poisoning in the organs.

Randall Zúñiga, director of Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency, said at a news conference that high carbon monoxide levels were found in the room the family was staying in at Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort. Zúñiga said the family stayed next to a room with a machine that may have caused the contamination.

In a statement in March, Brett Gardner and his wife Jessica said that several other family members got sick while on vacation, and that Miller died peacefully in his sleep.

“Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile,” the Gardners said in the statement. “He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day.”

Brett Gardner spent the entirety of his 17-year career with New York. The Yankees paid tribute to Miller Gardner during a moment of silence before the team’s home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers on March 27.
