Brentford agree transfer to sign Iceland goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson

Brentford have agreed a fee of around €3million with Swedish club Elfsborg to sign highly-rated Iceland goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson.

Valdimarsson, 22, has been capped five times by Iceland and is set to join Brentford following strong interest from other clubs.

The goalkeeper is flying in to London to complete his medical with the Premier League club.

Valdimarsson has been a regular for Elfsborg over the past three seasons and was named Goalkeeper of the Year in the Swedish top-flight in 2023.

He is Iceland’s first-choice goalkeeper, having made his first competitive debut against Portugal in November.

He is set to be the third arrival at Brentford in the January transfer window, following the arrival of Turkish midfielder Yunus Emre Konak from Sivasspor and the loan signing of full-back Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham.

Brentford also welcomed back Ivan Toney following his eight-month suspension from football — the striker netted in Saturday’s 3-2 Premier League victory over Nottingham Forest.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank said at the start of the month: “I’m convinced that we will be active in the market. How much? Which position? Let’s see.”
