Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams on future: "God knows what will happen"

Nico Williams says that he is very happy at Athletic Bilbao but “God knows what will happen in the future”.

Despite interest from Barcelona and Arsenal, the 22-year-old winger stayed at Athletic Bilbao this summer and was handed the number ten shirt earlier this month.

The Spain international, who was integral to his side’s European Championship victory in Germany, has three years left on his contract.

Speaking after his side’s 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Saturday, he told DAZN: “There were approaches from many clubs. I did well at the Euros and that’s a great showcase.

“I had many clubs to choose from but my heart is with Athletic Club. I’m happy here and I’m very happy here. God knows what will happen in the future.”

The Athletic previously reported that Williams was expected to remain with Bilbao this season, leaving Barcelona with practically zero chance of signing the winger in the summer transfer window.

Williams had a release clause in the region of €55million ($59m; £47m) and he was at the very top of Barcelona’s priority list regarding transfers this summer.

The Spaniard signed a three-year contract extension with the Basque club last December that runs until 2027.
